On Tuesday, July 1st, Governor Ron DeSantis announced a statewide tax-free holiday, making firearms and ammunition tax-free from September 8, 2025, to December 21, 2025. This tax-free holiday covers firearms, ammunition, and other outdoor items related to fishing and bowhunting.
DeSantis’ initiative, estimated to save Floridians $8 million, is a significant relief for gun owners.
The tax holiday will also cover items crucial for hurricane season, such as batteries, waterproof tarps, gas cans, life jackets, bike helmets, ground anchor systems, and tie-down kits.
While I am pleased with the tax holiday, guns and ammunition should be exempt from tax all year round.
When Governor DeSantis kick-started the legislative session this year, he caught us all off guard by resurrecting the idea of a tax holiday. After all the budgetary issues of the session, we had almost given up hope on this tax holiday. But here we are, with a renewed sense of optimism, pleasantly surprised by this unexpected turn of events.
It’s the least Florida’s Legislators Could Do
While this is great for gun owners across the state, we must remember it was the legislature that held up the 2A tax holiday and killed any meaningful pro-gun legislation.
Florida, during the past session, had the opportunity to set a national precedent in gun legislation.
Instead, we were met with petty fights from alleged conservatives who were fighting the Governor’s demands to legalize Open Carry and repeal “Red Flag” Gun Confiscation out of spite.
Not only were these two major priorities ignored and effectively killed by Republican leadership, the military age purchase ban was killed in the Senate.
These disappointments should not discourage us, but rather fuel our determination for the upcoming elections.
This tax holiday, while it’s a good thing, should not distract us gun owners from the reality of the anti-gun nature of the legislature in Tallahassee and these betrayals should not be forgotten when the next election comes around.
Our votes in the upcoming elections are our most powerful tool.
We at Florida Gun Rights will be working around the clock to hold these elected officials accountable.
